Placemakers, but not as we know it

Creating collaborations isn’t always easy but can provide satisfying outcomes. Placemakers (no relation) of San Carlos, California are a deconstruction company with a difference. Active on deconstructions in the Bay Area since 1995, CEO James Dawes has developed an eye for recovering interesting and eminently reusable materials, fixtures and fittings.

They supply reclaimed flooring and decorative wood paneling, but a more recent collaboration has elevated their capacity in supplying recovered timber. A partnership with The ReUse People of America has received a grant from the City of San Carlos which has enabled them to develop a modestly sized but well-equipped reused timber yard on their site. Timber is neatly sorted, stacked, labelled and priced, ready for designers and homeowners to create their recycled timber dream installations without losing time on hunting for the right thing.

The partnership with ReUse People of America enables deconstruction customers of Placemakers Inc to claim the tax benefit of donating materials for repurposing. James told me he never imagined applying for a grant, but it has enabled him to transform his yard space into real deconstruction hub.
